Ruin Me - SIFF 2018 Movie Review

The Movie: Ruin Me

The Director: Preston DeFrancis

The Cast: Marcienne Dwyer, Matt Dellapina, Chris Hill, Eva Hamilton, John Odom

The Story: Alexandra reluctantly tags along for Slasher Sleepout, an extreme event that is part camping trip, part haunted house, and part escape room. But when the fun turns deadly, Alex has to play the game if she wants to make it out alive.

The Review:
I thought this was a fun movie, it just didn't quite hit the mark for me. The idea of an escape room style game set in a cabin the woods style setting is pretty original but the end result has a lot of the same stuff we've seen many times before. The biggest strength is that it is a genuinely funny movie but it falls short as a horror film since it isn't really scary at all. To me, the title gives the idea that this is going to be a bloody hardcore genre film and it really isn't so I wish the film makers had gone with Slasher Sleepout as the title because it's obvious like the movie itself and embodies the fun, comedic vibe.

Overall this Ruin Me is a solid effort and definitely worth a look for genre fans.

Ruin Me is an official selection of the 2018 Seattle International Film Festival.
