Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts - SIFF 2018 Movie Review

The Movie: Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts

The Director: Mouly Surya

The Cast: Marsha Timothy, Dea Panendra, Egi Fedly, Yoga Pratama, Rita Matu Mona

The Story: Marlina lives quietly in Sumba until one day a man named Markus and his gang tries to rob her house and she kills him. Eventually, she is haunted by Markus, and her life turns in 180 degrees.

The Review:
At first, it felt like this movie was heading down a glorious and gory path of destruction that would have the titular hero slashing her way through a bevy of bad guys. No such luck. Instead we get a four part story, hence the title, that wanders around not accomplishing very much. There is some beautiful scenery and the cinematography is consistent and quite stunning at times so it was a joy to watch in that respect.

The acting across the board was kind of strange as everyone looks like they are trying to make their characters look as disinterested as possible while playing out each scene. Not sure if there was any sort of intent there or maybe it was just me. I do like the main character because her arc is established so well at the beginning, but the rest of her story was flat and uninteresting.

The Verdict:
Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts has a fantastic first act but the other three didn't do much for me. Worth a look but not on my radar as a must watch title.

Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts is an official selection of the 2018 Seattle International Film Festival.
