Spiral (2020) - Movie Review

The Movie: Spiral

The Director: Kurtis David Harder

The Cast: Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Ari Cohen, Jennifer Laporte, Lochlyn Munro, Chandra West, Ty Wood, Thomas Elms

The Story: Male mixed race couple moves to the suburbs and encounter evil cult of white people.

The Review:
Yes, this is an LGBTQ centered horror movie which is great but first and foremost this is a really good movie. The story may not be the most original which is fine, the execution is spot on and the performances are strong, especially Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman in the starring role who gives a stunning performance. Colin Minihan and John Poliquin have written a story that highlights the troubles a same sex couple may go through in America while also letting them exist as they are within the movie. You just know that the two men are a gay couple without the filmmakers waving a giant flag with tropes and stereotypes every ten seconds.

I mentioned how the story is not very original and, as you watch, you will find it fairly easy to pick up on what the eventual twists and reveals will be although for me that made it no less entertaining. The movie is more creepy that downright scary although there a few jump scare moments that were pretty effective. Most of the creepiness comes from the white suburban residents who we quickly learn are up to no good. It's no big secret to the audience that there is a not so hidden cult existing in the neighborhood as clues and behaviors start piling up pretty fast.

Spiral is a big step forward for representation in cinema and especially within the horror genre. Having a gay, black male lead playing a gay, black male in a movie about racism, homophobia, and demonic cults is really what we need right now.
