The Pool - Movie Review

The Movie: The Pool

The Director: Ping Lumpraploeng

The Cast: Theeradej Wongpuapan, Ratnamon Ratchiratham, A CGI Alligator

The Story: In an abandoned 6-meter deep pool, a couple is stranded there with a deadly predator.

The Review:
Okay, so the premise of this movie is way simple and you could easily think that it's going to be a dumb, cheesy movie that isn't worth your time. You would be wrong. Yes, the basic idea isn't anything to get too excited about, but the execution and sheer efficiency of the story is nearly flawless and I enjoyed every moment of it probably way more that I should have. Seriously, this movie kicks ass from the very beginning and never lets up all the until the very end.

Now, before we get too crazy here, don't start thinking that I'm declaring this a masterpiece or some sublime work of art, it's still a horror movie in a swimming pool. Let's keep it real. That being said, writer and director Ping Lumpraploeng knew exactly what he was creating and I don't know if the end result could have been any better. There is action, suspense, drama, thrills, scares, and yes I'm going to admit, there are a couple of scenes that will tug at your emotions, especially for those pet lovers out there.

The two main characters Day and Koi are played by Theeradej Wongpuapan and Ratnamon Ratchiratham with lots of energy and emotion which really helps to sell the story. Wongpuapan is a second generation actor in Thailand and is one of the country's biggest stars and, after watching his character get put through the ringer in this movie, I can see why he is so successful. After the first half hour, I realized this is one of those movies where you never want to say it can't get any worse because it does and most of the worse happens to Day.

The Verdict:
The Pool dives head first into the deep end of the horror pool and resurfaces with a really fun and thrilling movie. I liked it. A lot. Maybe more than I should have and I don't care.
