TwoOhSix Picks - 2019 GeekGirlCon

GeekGirlCon is a really fun convention in downtown Seattle that focuses on empowering women and girls to pursue their passions all within the context of geek culture. There are panels, vendors, exhibits, and all kinds of stuff for people to do all in a safe and inclusive environment that anyone would enjoy. Here is my TwoOhSix Picks list of the things you don't want to miss while you're there.

SATURDAY:
Librarians Recommend: The Best New, Inclusive Science Fiction and Fantasy Reads
Time: 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Panel Speakers: Emily Calkins, Jackie Parker, Robin Bradford, Zola Mumford, Jessica Werner
Librarians from Pacific Northwest libraries recommend their favorite new diverse and inclusive science fiction and fantasy reads. Fill your to-read pile with titles by queer authors and authors of color—we’ll cover at least 30 titles, so there’s sure to be something for every reader!

Disney Sing-Along
Time: 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Do you feel like Disney is a Part of Your World? Many songs feel like a Tale As Old As Time, so Be Our Guest and see How Far We’ll Go in a Whole New World of an hour-long sing-along! You don’t want to miss this Once Upon a Dream opportunity!

The Doubleclicks Concert
Time: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
The Doubleclicks live in concert! The Doubleclicks are a folk-pop music duo made up of siblings Laser and Aubrey. The siblings perform songs that are geeky, snarky, sweet, and uplifting on their cello, ukulele, and meowing cat keyboard.

Luminous Beings Are We: Diversity and the Future of Star Wars
Time: 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Speakers: Bianca Hernandez, Johnnie Jae, Kay Ahern, Caitlin Jacques, Bridget Strychnine, Kate Sellers
An explorative and forward-looking panel on representation in Star Wars. Looking towards the future of the franchise and fandom, we reflect on what we’ve learned and experienced during the last four years of new Star Wars content and what we hope to see in the era following the Skywalker saga.

Transformative Racism: Race and Fandom
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Speakers: Rockette Fox, Symantha Reagor, Johnnie Jae
Fandom is a space where fans are able to express their admiration about the thing they are a fan of. This space has historically been and continues to be, in some cases, a place where racism persists. Let’s discuss the experience fans of color have had in fandoms, what can be done by other fans to fight against racism within the fandom spaces, and how social justice can be used as a tool.

SUNDAY:
Meet and Greet with Women of NASA
Time: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Meet and Greet: Trudy Kortes, Dajae Williams
Meet our guests from NASA! Trudy Kortes has spent 30 years at NASA laughing her way through career challenges. She is eager to share her secrets to maintaining her humor through bad bosses, intense roles, and difficult decisions. Dajae Williams is a graduate of Missouri S&T and is currently a Quality Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab. At JPL, Dajae is responsible for helping ensure the quality of actuators for the SWOT and NISAR mission. In addition to her work at NASA, she writes educational hip hop music to aid in teaching underprivileged students STEM topics.

From Character Creation to Career Planning
Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Dump stats, job points, skill trees: nerds have a lot of practice building characters designed to excel in their chosen professions, but we don’t always know how to do the same in real life. This workshop will provide a career planning framework grounded in character creation systems, like the kinds found in Final Fantasy titles, D&D campaigns, or Bioware games. Together, we’ll make a space to reflect, clarify, and celebrate our experiences and sketch out a character sheet for our professional selves.

Wellness for Geeks Who Sit by GeekGirlStrong
Time: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Are you a gamer, writer, cosplayer, artist, or simply a person who spends a lot of time sitting at a desk? This movement-based workshop is designed to help you fix those aches and pains that develop over time from being hunched over the latest armor build or beating the final boss. You will leave this workshop with a new set of skills in your health arsenal including mobility stretches, strength movements, and nutritional tips. Note: This is a seated movement workshop, tailored with various body types in mind. All movements can be modified depending on individual needs!

Time: 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Join us for our annual Cosplay Contest at GeekGirlCon 2019! Come and support your fellow geeks as they showcase their finest wears and craftship while bringing their favorite characters to life. There will be prizes for stage presence and costume artistry. Cheer on our fantastic cosplayers!
