The Movie: Marry Me

The Story: Music superstars Kat Valdez and Bastian are getting married before a global audience of fans. But when Kat learns, seconds before her vows, that Bastian has been unfaithful, she decides to marry Charlie, a stranger in the crowd, instead.
The Review:
Jennifer Lopez in a romantic comedy is always going to get a look from me. I have been a fan of the actress/singer/dancer/producer/business woman ever since she burst onto the scene with her starring role as Selena way back in 1997. Wow, that just hit me, it's been 25 years since that movie came out. If you haven't seen, please check it out and especially if you do not know who Selena Quintanilla was. Anyways, I'm supposed to be typing about Marry Me so back to it.
Of course, J-Lo plays an international superstar singer, no stretch there, who abruptly marries single dad and math teacher Charlie Gilbert, Owen Wilson's character in about as unlikely of a scenario as there could possibly be. Don't worry, this is just a silly fun rom com so this is where these types of things will happen. Yes, this is supposed to be sort of an odd couple pairing of two people from completely different worlds and yet I never really felt a genuine connection between the two actors, like there was no real chemistry.
At first that dynamic works because that's how it's supposed to be but as they get closer and get to know each other, I never got a real sense that the characters were falling in love. Other than this though, I enjoyed the movie, it's a lot of fun and it's nice to see the single dad angle play out as well with emerging star Chloe Coleman adding to her already impressive resume that includes films like My Spy and Gunpowder Milkshake. The father daughter relationship was a lot more natural and credible than the love angle and it actually would have been interesting to see that developed further.
Fans of Jennifer Lopez and Maluma will enjoy the concert level stage performances with all the lights and sounds and party vibes you could ever want. There are several original songs from both performers including the title song which is a duet, both a dance version and a ballad version. The songs are very much in line with what we all know from both performers which is a good thing, they're all fun songs. Overall the movie looks great with some beautiful set designs and glamorous costuming and the whole thing just has a glossy, well put together look to it.
The Verdict:
Marry Me is a really fun, feel good movie with a great cast and it should fit nicely into the holiday season vibes Valentine's day romcoms. The movie looks great and sounds great although a lack of chemistry between the two leads keeps this from the long term commitment it promises to make.
