The Review:
As 2020 has been winding down in the world of movie watching I actually hadn't planned on checking this one out but eventually caved in thanks to a fair amount of positive feedback. I do like Mads Mikkelsen in just about everything he does and getting to see him act drunk for a couple hours seemed like a great idea. The story starts off about as you would expect and it never veers from that course of unexpected storytelling. I guess maybe I was expecting something a little more stylized or outlandish given the subject matter.

Basically this movie follows the path of a group of guys who begin an experiment based in being drunk, they get drunk, and eventually bad things happen because of course they do. I almost felt like the script writers were following a paint by numbers formula every step of the way only without any strong emotional hits that might draw me in and have me caring about what was happening. For me, the best part of the movie was the troubled relationship between Martin (Mikkelsen) and Anika, played beautifully by Maria Bonnevie. The chemistry between the two is the highlight of the movie and I was really hoping to see a lot more of their interactions but the evils of alcohol took precedence.

The movie tries to end on a high note filled with dancing and inspiration which is all fine and good and I suppose that's my lasting impression of the movie. There are several strong performances and the movie has some great moments but overall it's just fine and good. I always enjoy a movie that Mads Mikkelsen is in, I can't think of any offhand that I don't like, and this one really is no exception.

The Verdict:
Another Round is a sobering tale of intoxication and the dangers of overindulging in alcoholic endeavors even if they happen to be in the name of science.
