Tazza: One Eyed Jack (타짜: 원 아이드 잭) - Movie Review

The Movie: Tazza: One Eyed Jack (타짜: 원 아이드 잭)

The Director: Kwon Oh-kwang

The Cast: Park Jung-min, Ryoo Seung-bum and Choi Yu-hwa

The Story: After losing everything, a young expert poker player raises the stakes by joining a crew for a job that may be a bigger gamble than any of them are ready for.

The Review:
Gamblers and swindlers and con artists, oh my! This movie is filled with these types and they all play off of, with, and against each other throughout the whole movie. The fun is never knowing who is conning who or who is ready to turn on someone at a moment's notice. Director Kwon Oh-kwang fills the movie with enough twists and turns to make Danny Ocean proud and, by the end, he wraps things up nicely while still leaving the door open for even more gambling down the road.

For me the key to why this movie was so enjoyable came from the delightful casting choices for each role. At one point of the movie, a team of con artists is assembled and their distinct personalities play off of each other brilliantly and we also get to see how they each mature and learn to work together despite some clear differences of opinion when they first meet. One of my favorite performances out of the group came from Lim Ji-yeon as Young-Mi, a con artist who uses her charm and sex appeal to steal money and gambling chips from anyone she can find. I also remember seeing her in Luck-Key, a comedy film from a few years ago that I really enjoyed and I hope to see her take on more of these types of entertaining roles.

Tazza: One Eyed Jack is a classic con job that comes up aces with explosive personalities and unpredictable antics. No gambling here, this movie is a sure thing so place your bets and head straight to the theater as it's sure to be a full house.
