The Review:
I have been the Pokemon Go game since shortly after it debuted so I at least recognize who most of these cute little characters are but nothing really about their history or backstory. I only say this because, even without the extensive knowledge that would come from playing all the games, watching all the shows, and doing all the other related things, I still thoroughly enjoyed this family friendly and action packed feature film.

The story has some very interesting twists and turns including a few surprises at the end which I of course won't spoil here, just know that they are very satisfying and help to justify a couple creative choices, number one being what the heck is Ryan Reynolds doing in this movie as the voice of Pikachu. I mean, Pikachu doesn't have and has never had a voice that would ever come close to the guy currently most well known as Marvel's "Merc with a Mouth", the one and only Deadpool. I know, right?!

Those out there who do have an intimate knowledge of all the crazy little creatures and monsters that inhabit this property are really going to get a kick out of seeing everything from Psyducks to Charizards. There are Bulbasaurs and Mewtwos, Snorlaxes and Loudreds, Squirtles and Dittos. There were so many monsters packed into this movie and none of it seemed excessive or hard to keep track of. The film makers did a great job of populating their world equally with humans and monsters like they have always existed together and everything was perfectly normal.

This being a family friendly movie, the story was a basic tale of right and wrong with some dysfunctional family dynamics thrown in for good measure and, while most of it gets wrapped up nicely, there is actually a lot to think about when it's all said and done and you get the impression that the heroes of the story are just beginning their story rather than having it come to an end.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu is a really fun movie that families and kids of all ages can enjoy together. The rewatchability factor is very high not just because it's an enjoyable movie but also because you'll want to see how many Pokemon you missed the first time around.
