Meatball Machine Kodoku (蠱毒 ミートボールマシン) (SIFF 2017) - Movie Review

The Movie: Meatball Machine Kodoku (蠱毒 ミートボールマシン)

The Director: Yoshihiro Nishimura

The Cast: Yoji Tanaka, Yurisa, Takumi Saito

The Story: A long-awaited sequel to the internationally acclaimed full-throttle splatter sci-fi action horror "Meatball Machine".

The Review:
Yoshihiro Nishimura has been making movies like this for a long time, going back to his work in the makeup department on Noboru Iguchi's classics The Machine Girl and Robogeisha and then on to his own films like Tokyo Gore Police, Mutant Girls Squad, and now we have Meatball Machine Kodoku, a sequel to 2005's Meatball Machine which he was the special makeup effects supervisor working for director Yudai Yamaguchi. The main things these films all have in common are crazy low budget style special effects and lots and lots of blood and especially this film. After the action gets rolling, Nishimura fills just about every scene with blood streaming, flying, shooting, pouring, soaking, and dripping all over everything and everyone.

The main character in the story is Yuji, a man struggling with work, money, health, age, and trying to get the courage to speak to the young woman he has had his eye on for some time. Yuji is played by veteran film actor Yôji Tanaka who has been in countless Japanese films and TV shows as well as playing one of the Crazy 88's in the Kill Bill movies and making an appearance in the 2010 live action remake of Space Battleship Yamato. In this film, he plays alongside Yurisa (I believe she is most well known as a Korean model), who plays Kaoru, the previously mentioned love interest, although she turns out to be quite the heroine herself. The two work nicely together during the quieter moments although seriously, this movie is all about the blood splattering action so the quality of acting really isn't that important.

The Verdict:
Meatball Machine Kodoku is a kick ass film that begs to be seen in a theater filled with people who can appreciate what this movie is all about. While it may not be for everyone, those who can take a little bit of movie with their blood and guts soaked cyberpunk comedy will have a great time watching all of the absurdity and hilarity unfold.
