Host (2020) - Movie Review

The Movie: Host

The Director: Rob Savage

The Cast: Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova, Caroline Ward, Edward Linard, Seylan Baxter

The Story: Six friends hire a medium to hold a seance via Zoom during lock down - but they get far more than they bargained for as things quickly go wrong.

The Review:
We've all seen videos make the rounds on the internet of Zoom calls gone wrong in some fashion or another so it was just a matter of time that, during the pandemic, we would see the horror genre step up and give us some good old fashioned scares using the group chat format. Sure, there have been films before that use the computer POV like Unfriended or Searching, but this movie adds the pandemic into the mix creates a bit more of a sense of urgency to the proceedings.

Director Rob Savage has created just the right tone and also kept the movie to just under an hour total run time so there's no unnecessary exposition or back story or mythical legends to explore it's just here's the set up and go straight to the good stuff. The cast is also spot on and each of the ladies we see on screen goes all in when it comes to their respective times to shine. You get the idea that this is a group of long time friends who fight as much as they laugh together so you know there will be some drama as well as some jokes, at least up until the scary stuff starts to happen.

There's honestly not much else to this movie and that's exactly why it works so well. Oh, I will also say that the set design for each of the girls' apartments is perfectly created with doorways and other spaces that you keep glancing at to see if something is about to happen which just adds to the fun. Host is the perfect movie to watch in the dark, on your laptop, and with your headphones on. I feel weird saying that because normally I demand that people see stuff in the theaters but right now we can't and the movie is at it's best when you feel like you are right there with the characters.

Host is a movie that will give you the "Spookies" with several legit scares, a great premise, and a cast of characters you will be rooting for until the very end. The way this movie was made is just as amazing as the movie itself and is further proof that talent and creativity can beat out any obstacle, even if that obstacle is a global pandemic.
