The Movie: Lapsis

The Story: In a parallel present, Ray Tincelli is struggling to support himself and his ailing younger brother. After a series of two-bit hustles and unsuccessful swindles, Ray takes a job trekking deep into the forest, pulling cable over miles of terrain to connect large, metal cubes that link together the new quantum trading market.
The Review:
After creating a couple activist minded documentaries, director Noah Hutton takes a stab at science fiction as allegory for the current state of capitalism and economic disparity. The constantly evolving gig economy is Hutton's primary target although he goes after just about everything including big pharma, tech companies, and the healthcare industry. The commentary and messaging shouldn't be anything we don't already know although how it is presented is quite interesting and puts it in terms that might make someone look at these things a bit differently.
Playing the standard every man, behind on technology, middle aged type person, Dean Imperial is all of us as his character Ray Tincelli questions everything while navigating through a word he knows nothing about. I really enjoyed how likable and relatable his performance is even though he may not be the most upstanding or honest person, Ray seems to always have good intentions. There's a joke in the movie about how he looks and sounds like a 70's Italian gangster and he totally owns it and lives that life. I could definitely see him taking on some roles in that world.
The Verdict:
Lapsis attempt to show the world how our entire economic structure and broken and geared towards consolidating wealth for a few people at the top of the food chain. While we may all have a basic understanding of that this exists, the movie does a good job of showing exactly how it's happening.
