The Witch: Subversion / 마녀 - Movie Review

The Movie: The Witch: Subversion / 마녀

The Director: Park Hoon-jung

The Cast: Kim Da-Mi, Jo Min-Soo, Choi Woo-Sik, Go Min-Si, Park Hee-Soon, Da-Eun

The Story: A high school student with amnesia tries to uncover what has happened to her. All leading her into deeper troubles ultimately revealing a darkness she could not have imagined.

The Review:
First let me say, don't watch any trailers for this movie, it could ruin a lot of the fun surprises that are essential to how the story plays out. What starts out as sort of a cute yet mysterious teenage buddy comedy, eventually turns into something totally unexpected and completely welcome. I'm not sure how much I want to talk about the second half of the movie because there are a couple big time twists and reveals that are best kept under wraps. Director Park Hoon-jung really makes a point to let this movie sneak up on you and the end result is a lot of fun and very satisfying.

The witch of the movie is 19 year old high school student Young Ja-yoon, played beautifully by Kim Da-mi, and she goes through quite the transformation from where we see her at the beginning of the movie. Oddly enough there's a bit of a Clark Kent element to her character as she is adopted by an aging couple who live on the outskirts of the city and she her personality definitely matches the awkward goofiness and innocence that Superman's alter ego presents to the world. Now that's not to say that Young Ja-yoon will eventually be flying around rescuing kittens from trees and leaping over tall buildings but there are a few more similarities that you will see as the story unfolds.

When I say that Kim Da-mi plays her part beautifully, I mean that I was very impressed with the versatility and subtleties she brought to the character considering who Young Ja-yoon starts out as and then who she ends up being. Her work in the movie is very impressive overall and I'm really hoping we get to see more of her in what could easily become a franchise. It was also nice to see Choi Woo-Sik in another movie, he seems to have a knack for picking good ones as he has had roles in Parasite, Train to Busan, Okja, and The Divine Fury.

The Verdict:
The Witch: Subversion is a really creative mystery filled thriller and there's much more to it than I was expecting. There's elements of horror, action, science fiction, fantasy, comedy, and just about any other genre you can think of.
