Spring Breakers - Movie Review

Spring Breakers is the latest crazy concoction from director Harmony Korine. The man has helped to create some very interesting movies including Kids, Gummo, and Mister Lonely and this one falls right in line with the rest. James Franco, Selena Gomez, and Vanessa Hudgens star in what might be the strangest spring break movie ever made.

A group of college girls (Gomez, Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine) find a creative way to fund the spring break trip they've been wanting to take for some time. After a typical wild start to their trip, things start to get even crazier than even they expected. After landing in jail following a drug and alcohol fueled night on the beach, a rapper that goes by the name Alien (Franco) takes notice and bails them out so he can bring them along on his Scarface inspired adventures.

There is no easy explanation for what this movie ends up becoming. Korine's voyeuristic odyssey has just as many brilliantly outrageous moments as there are painfully drawn out scenes and the whole time you can never completely make sense of it all. From the beginning, you get the raucous spring break partying you expect, but don't blink because before you know it, you're deep inside a ghetto fabulous strip club where guns are just as plentiful as one dollar bills.

When you look at the cast, you can see exactly why each girl is in this movie. They are all beautiful, young women that would be the life of any party and they get to act out every spring break cliché you could ever think of. On the other hand, would you ever have imagined James Franco playing a braided hair, gold toothed, drug dealing rapper? Me either, but boy does he have a great time with this role. He hams it up to a point just shy of making the character too absurd even for this movie.

Before you head out to see this movie, you need to fully understand what Spring Breakers really is. Harmony Korine's overly stylized creation is about as gratuitous as it gets when it comes to drugs, alcohol, guns, sex, nudity, and moments of unexpected craziness that will burn itself in to your brain. Just remember that its not all fun and games as there are more than a few times where the whole thing comes to a screeching halt, but overall you won't be mad you managed to sit through it all.
