The Review:
Body horror is a very specific genre that, when done right, can be a very visceral and quite often shocking experience and Grafted falls right in line on all fronts. Director Sasha Rainbow seemed to have a very clear vision for the type of story she wanted to tell and, for the most part, it was executed pretty well on screen.
There are plenty of scenes that are just a bloody mess and I mean that in a good way although the story itself was at times kind of a mess but only because it was fairly predictable. I mean, you have to know how this story is going to play out, at least until the very end when the final moments hit you with a massive WTF and then the credits begin to roll which was kind of brilliant in its own way.
For me, the highlight of this movie is the ensemble nature of the performances as three different actors were tasked with playing the same character. If you look at the poster, you might get the idea of what I'm talking about and I also don't want to give away too much so I'll leave it at that. The gore and bloodshed and violently graphic nature of the movie also made this a really fun movie to watch and I'm assuming by the look of everything that all the effects were done practically with minimal to no CGI that I could see.
This movie will be playing exclusively on Shudder and it's definitely worth a look, especially for fans of the body horror genre, there's enough to like here. There's even a hint at the end that a sequel could be possible. Maybe. If it happens, I'd check it out.
