Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - Movie Review

The Movie: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

The Director: Jake Kasdan

The Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Rhys Darby, Bobby Cannavale, Nick Jonas, Alex Wolff, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner

The Story: Four teenagers discover an old video game console and are literally drawn into the game's jungle setting, becoming the adult avatars they choose.

The Review:
Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart had a successful collaboration with Central Intelligence so it make sense for them to team up for another big, action comedy. Adding Jack Black and Karen Gillan into the mix turned out to be another great move as the four actors worked together and played off of each other really. So much so that I could see Jumanji becoming a big franchise with endless video game scenario possibilities. Even the four young actors who play the teen, real world versions of the characters fit nicely together and could easily move forward with the franchise.

The effects are big and the action is impressive and there is a perfect amount of comedy thrown in to keep the story moving along nicely. From the very beginning, director Jake Kasdan sets the tone and lets everyone know that this is going to be a fun adventure film that anyone can and will enjoy without taking any of it too seriously. Bobby Cannavale, with limited screen time is actually quite effective as the big bad guy and I hope he is able to make a return for more dastardly deeds.

The Verdict:
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a big, fun action comedy that is hard not to enjoy. At it's heart, the movie is also a nice coming of age story as the group of teens are forced to figure out who they really are in order to save the day.
