The Night House - Movie Review

The Movie: The Night House

The Director: David Bruckner

The Cast: Rebecca Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Vondie Curtis Hall, Evan Jonigkeit, Stacy Martin

The Story: The Night House follows a widow who begins to uncover her recently deceased husband’s disturbing secrets.

The Review:
Rebecca Hall has had a very interesting career, showing up in indie projects, horror movies, prestige films, and even Marvel blockbusters although, from my point of view, she's never quite reached the level of stardom I thought she was headed for. That's not really meant to be a knock on her career, she has been very consistent and has done some really good work over the years and I feel like this movie has provided an opportunity as a showcase of sorts for just about everything the actress is capable of.

The screenplay, written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, is a very solid effort even if it does draw influences from several other films that have come before it. The horror genre I think can only go so many directions so you're going to get a lot of overlap when it comes to story ideas so I'm not going to knock a movie for treading the same waters especially when it's done in a way that is as entertaining and as efficient as this one is. I mean, there's not a whole lot that stands out about this movie either exceptionally good or exceptionally bad, but it does find a lane and sits there in that sweet spot all the way through.

Looking for jump scares? This movie doesn't have many but the two I am thinking of absolutely knock it out of the park and I would say they make the whole experience more than worth the effort if that's what you're looking for. Other than that, this movie is much more a dark, moody grind that deliberately peels layers of story back and ends up providing a satisfactory experience when it's all said and done.

The Verdict:
The Night House finds a home in the world of dark and creepy horror movies while Rebecca Hall builds off of the foundation laid out by the filmmakers.
