Hereditary - Movie Review

The Movie: Hereditary

The Director: Ari Aster

The Cast: Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff,

The Story: After the family matriarch passes away, a grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences, and begin to unravel dark secrets.

The Review:
Ari Aster definitely earns points for originality as his latest effort is filled with unique visuals and a story that will keep you guessing all the way to the end. There is really nothing about the story you have ever seen before and the best way I can describe the mood is that it is creepy AF. Right from the beginning, you can feel it deep down that there is something horribly wrong with the world we are looking at and the soundtrack, composed by Colin Stetson, does a great job of enhancing that uneasy feeling that sticks with you for days.

This movie isn't jump out of your seat scary, it's more of a make you think every person and every thing is evil kind of scary which is probably even scarier because it's not a monster or thing that might get you, it's every thing around every dark corner. As the story unfolds, I had no idea what it was getting at and, when I thought I knew, that's when it would take a horrifying left turn. By the end of the movie, I sat there thinking how the film makers were not afraid to take the story to the places they did which was quite honestly pretty impressive because, from a Hollywood money making perspective, it wasn't the safe thing to do.

Let's talk about Toni Collette for just a brief second. Best Actress Oscar Nomination.

She deserves it. End of story.

The Verdict:
Hereditary is creepy AF. The characters are creepy, the house is creepy, the story is creepy, and everything that happens just creeps you out. This is some next level horror that a lot of people aren't ready for and should be considered a must see.
