The Review:
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie primarily because of the great cast which includes Jenny Slate who is always a delight to watch and funny man extraordinaire Charlie Day front and center. The two have great chemistry together I think mainly because they are both just naturally funny in a very endearing way so pairing them up is a no brainer that works really well. Adding in Gina Rodriguez and Scott Eastwood to a movie is always a good thing so throwing all four together into a movie should be a recipe for success.

The romantic comedy genre in general isn't what it once was in years past and I really don't know why as it seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to throw a good story together with some actors who work well on screen. Apparently it's not that easy because there just aren't that many really good ones coming out in this modern era of movie making. While this movie doesn't really do anything to change that, it is a reasonably entertaining movie, mainly because of the aforementioned cast.

The story is pretty basic and fairly predictable which makes a good case for lack of original possibilities being an issue affecting the genre. I mean, we've seen this type of story many times before although in different forms so there are no surprises to be had and it really does play out exactly as you expect it to. The most perplexing thing about the movie is its ending which feels tagged on almost like a post credits scene although it's supposed to be there to put a bow on the whole thing. It just feels weird and almost ruined the whole thing for me. You'll understand if/when you see it.

The Verdict:
I Want You Back is a cute and likable rom com that has a tough time overcoming its shortcomings. A great cast keeps this movie from being a total dud.
