Wrath of the Titans - Movie Review

Thanks to the unbelievable success of "Avatar", which came out in December of 2009 and crushed box office records, the "Clash of the Titans" remake that was set to be released just a couple months later was rushed through a 3D post conversion so the movie studio could capitalize on the sudden popularity of the technology.

When the movie was released in early 2010, it opened to huge success, but audiences quickly turned on it due to a really bad 3D transfer that gave people headaches more than it wow'd them. For "Wrath of the Titans" to succeed, this problem would have to be eliminated.

Mirror Mirror - Movie Review

It seems like in most movies where there is a good versus evil story, the villain tends to steal the spotlight away from the hero and ends up being the more colorful of the two characters. This is definitely the case as Julia Roberts throws everything she has at creating a deliciously fun take on The Queen in this new version of the classic Snow White story.

The Hunger Games - Movie Review

"The World Will be Watching" is a very appropriate slogan for a movie that goes in to its release date with a huge built in fan base that has devoured a story originally presented over three best selling novels.

With high expectations firmly in place, the movie's success will depend on big box office numbers and that means recreating a story that will please both fans of the books and also those, like myself, that know virtually nothing about the story going in.

Winnie the Pooh - Movie Review

The return to the big screen of one of the most cherished animated characters of all time was a welcome addition to the year's crop of family friendly movies. Watching the honey loving bear and his friends in a an all new adventure is always a special treat to be shared by children and those that still remember what it was like.

Midnight In Paris - Movie Review

This may be surprising, but this is the first Woody Allen movie that I have ever watched. I'm sure I've missed out on some really interesting films over the years, but none of them have really looked very appealing to me. "Midnight in Paris" may not have been the best starting point to enter in to Mr. Allen's universe, but this is where my journey begins.

21 Jump Street - Movie Review

At first glance, "21 Jump Street" looks like the result of a movie studio attempting to cash in on yet another property from the 80's, but the end result goes far beyond that assumption with a really fun story that stays current while finding unique ways to both pay homage to and ridicule a decade that a lot of people really don't want to relive.

Silent House - Movie Review

This is yet another movie that is supposedly inspired by true events although you never really know how much of it is based on anything at all. "Silent House" does employ a film making technique that is actually really cool compared to some of the other gimmicks out there and gives the viewer a different perspective on watching how the movie plays out.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen - Movie Review

"Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" is based on a novel by Paul Torday and is directed by Lasse Hallström who also brought Chocolat, Slumdog Millionaire, and What's Eating Gilbert Grape to the screen. The movie stars Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, and Kristin Scott Thomas in roles that are absolutely perfect for each of them.

John Carter - Movie Review

Disney is hoping that "John Carter" will be a very successful and popular movie that can then become a franchise with the potential for several future installments. Based on a story that has a very rich history as a series of science fiction novels written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, this movie is based on the first novel which was titled "Princess of Mars".

Project X (2012) - Movie Review

Todd Phillips has definitely become Hollywood's resident party expert having produced classics like Old School and the Hangover movies. With Project X, he takes the audience back to high school and throws a party that every teenage kid wishes they had been responsible for.

Avatar - Movie Review

Easily the most hyped movie of any 2009 release partly due to the fact that this film and world was created by Mr. “King of the World” himself, James Cameron. He seems to carry a lot of baggage and expectation to everything he does although after making the highest grossing movie of all time in Titanic, you can’t really blame people for the reaction.

Aside from all of that, Cameron continues to put his heart and soul in to every film that he releases dating back to such great films as The Abyss, Aliens, Terminator 2, and even the Dark Angel TV series which starred a young and still unknown Jessica Alba.

2011 Movie of the Year

2011 had no shortage of quality movies, from big time blockbusters to smaller, relatively unknown features and I was fortunate enough to see so many of them (and even a few not so good ones) in the theaters.

For me, the main indicator of a movie's quality is the emotion that I feel as I am walking out of the theater as well as how long the movie sticks with me after seeing it. Some fade away very quickly and others have me dwelling on them for days, weeks, and sometimes longer. There are also a select few that I walk away from immediately wanting to see them again and wanting to know more about the people and places I just saw.

These are the ones that I remember as my favorites and each year there is one memorable movie in particular that manages to stand above the rest. With all of that being said and without any further delay, the winner of the first ever 'Two Oh Six: Movie of the Year' award goes to...

The Help - Movie Review

For a movie like 'The Help' to work, the cast would need to be spot on perfect and their portrayals of each character would have to be carefully crafted to avoid falling in to cliche and stereotype. For the most part, the actors succeed at pulling this off and what we are given is a heartfelt portrayal of a turbulent time for women of all races and classes.

This is my first attempt at picking the winners of those famous gold "Oscar" trophies and I look forward to seeing who actually walks away with them. I  have only included categories where I feel I can make a good decision while leaving out ones where I would only be guessing.

You will see the nominees for each category along with who I feel will ultimately win although you will not see who I feel is the most deserving of the awards. Those announcements will be saved for another post.

My Favorite Movies of 2010

Welcome to my second annual recap of the movies that I found to be the most entertaining releases of the year. This ranking is solely my opinion and puts an emphasis on the fun I had in watching each movie and that first wave of emotion you have upon leaving the theater.

Inception - Movie Review

CLICK HERE to see my other favorite movies of 2010!

'Inception' is a movie directed by Christopher Nolan and features an all star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, and Marion Cotillard and features a story unlike anything you have ever seen.

This Means War - Movie Review

'This Means War' is a movie starring Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, and Tom Hardy which in itself should be enough to get anyone in to a movie theater. All three are great at what they do and this type of movie seems like a perfect fit for what each of them brings to the table.

Titanic 3D - Movie Review

Director, James Cameron spent a lot of time and money converting Titanic into the 3D format in hopes of giving audiences an entirely new experience and I do hope that what he has achieved here is what we can expect from the future of 3D movies.

Safe House - Movie Review

There are two things you can count on when Denzel Washington is in a movie. The first is that he will be the coolest person on the screen at all times and the other is that it will be a movie worth watching. Both are absolutely true with this movie and on top of that, Ryan Reynolds gives a gritty performance that I honestly didn't think he was capable of.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - Movie Review

After a relatively successful remake of the classic Journey to the Center of the Earth, Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema has upped the ante with bigger special effects and adding in Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in place of Brendan Fraser as lead character in what could be a continuing series of movies based on Jules Verne's timeless stories.
