Wineville - Movie Review

The Movie: Wineville

The Director: Brande Roderick

The Cast: Brande Roderick, Carolyn Hennesy, Texas Battle, Casey Lott, Keaton Roderick Cadrez, Will Roberts

The Story: A woman who escaped her abusive father as a teen must return to settle the affairs of the family vineyard upon his death. She finds that the dark secrets she left behind have only festered and blackened over the decades, fermenting into violence and death.

The Review:
Brande Roderick has been known for her appearances in TV shows like Baywatch and genre films like Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror and now here she is directing her first feature film, a throwback that captures the late night drive in vibe of 70's and 80's horror. This movie reminds me of being a kid sitting in front of the TV late at night after my parents had gone to bed and finding stuff on the cable channels that I probably shouldn't have been watching.

If you like your horror movies soaked in blood and guts then this is the film for you. There are several scenes where that's what you literally get and several more where various body parts are chopped up, hacked to pieces, or ground into a goopy mess. I will say there wasn't much in the way of jump scares if that's what you're looking for but I really didn't have a problem with that just have the right expectation and you'll enjoy just about everything this movie has to offer.

Also, the low budget nature of the movie plays right into the old school vibe and the whole thing just feels very real and textured without any excessive use of CGI, at least none that is noticeable. Overall, Roderick has created an impressive debut effort and it'll be interesting to see where she goes from here. I would love to see an even deeper dive into this type of genre filmmaking with even more of an emphasis on filling the screen with as much bloody goodness as possible.
