6:45 - Movie Review

The Movie: 6:45

The Director: Craig Singer

The Cast: Michael Reed, Augie Duke, Armen Garo, Thomas G. Waites

The Story: What if one of the best days of your life suddenly turned into your very worst nightmare? And what if you were forced to relive that same day again and again?

The Review:
Over the last several years, the time loop plot device, first popularized by Groundhog Day, has become a full blown genre with recent entries that include The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, Boss Level, and of course the Happy Death Day franchise as one of the most popular. While the more effective films that fall into this category tend to treat the plot device with a light hearted or comedic flair director Craig Singer attempts to go full on horror which in a way does set it apart from the others.

The flaw here is that I didn't find this particular journey of reliving the same day over and over again to be interesting or compelling in any way and I felt like the filmmakers were spoon feeding a bit too much to get their point across. An example being a bar of soap that literally gets picked up and shown to the camera in close up so we can see the same gross hairs on it every time when really just a quick shot of it on the counter would have been more than sufficient.

The characters themselves are likable enough with solid performances from both Michael Reed and Augie Duke although I thought Armen Garo laid on the creepiness a bit too heavy which almost bordered on parody. The movie had a lot of potential, I just wonder if this niche time loop genre is starting to show its limits.

The Verdict:
6:45 is a time loop thriller that could have used more time to get its story right. The repetitiveness is just that and the need to over explain kind of kills this one for me.
