Warning: Do Not Play / 암전 - Movie Review

The Movie: Warning: Do Not Play / 암전

The Director: Kim Jin-won

The Cast: Seo Ye-ji Jin Sun-kyu Kim Mi-kyeong Narendra Singh Dhami

The Story: A struggling director makes a desperate bid to dig into the urban legend about a film shot by a ghost, at the risk of her own life.

The Review:
So, this is a very strange film that I'm not really sure how I felt after watching it. At first glance it seems like a mild rip off of the Ringu concept of becoming cursed after watching a video, in this case a movie, although that's really not it at all. Yes, there is a cursed movie although the legend says it was actually made by a ghost and it's the ghost that hunts people down for it's own personal reasons not just because you've watched the movie.

For some reason that I never quite grasped, the main character desperately tries to find and watch this movie full well knowing there is a curse behind it. Basically she is seeking inspiration for her own horror film she is trying to write and I suppose a movie like this needs a person to keep moving forward even when presented with unrelenting danger. I just never felt any of her journey was justified other than her just being crazy which is actually hinted at during a conversation she has.

Overall the movie just feels really disjointed and confusing and, while there are moments and sequences that I really liked, it wasn't enough to justify the overall story. Is it scary? Actually yes. Is it worth plodding through an incoherent story to get to the good parts? I'll leave that up to you. I'm a sucker for Korean horror although even this one left me feeling like I should have listened to the title's message.
