Frances Ferguson - SIFF 2019 Movie Review

The Movie: Frances Ferguson

The Director: Bob Byington

The Cast: Kaley Wheless, Nick Offerman, Keith Poulson, David Krumholtz, Martin Starr, Jennifer Prediger, Bill Wise

The Story: A small town's reaction to scandal.

The Review:
If you like your comedies delivered with a dry and rye deadpan style that is filled with snark and attitude then this is the movie for you. The narrative is narrated by the one and only Nick Offerman and you can just imagine how his signature demeanor fits perfectly with this finely crafted bit of film making. Director Bob Byington has slowly built up a career and resume that is quite impressive in its consistency and I would probably say that this is his best work yet.

The story was written, created, and crafted over time by both Byington and Kaley Wheless who also happens to play the title character in the film. Their collaboration has resulted in a story telling technique that is deliberate in its approach and has a comedic wit that doesn't play for the obvious and overused shock and awe moments but draws you in slowly in a way that is just left of reality but extraordinarily relatable.

The character Frances Ferguson is not a real person although this story has been told so many times in the news all across America, you will swear that she is. Which is kind of the point of the movie. We all have a Frances Ferguson in our home state and we all have opinions of who she is and what kind of person she is. This movie makes you look at that idea just a little bit differently.

Frances Ferguson is a really good film. It took me a while to fully digest this story and the more I think about it, the more I enjoy the quirkiness and humor that bring the whole thing to life.

Frances Ferguson is an official selection of the 2019 Seattle International Film Festival.
