Fighting with My Family - Movie Review

The Movie: Fighting with My Family

The Director: Stephen Merchant

The Cast: Florence Pugh, Jack Lowden, Dwayne Johnson, Lena Headey, Vince Vaughn, Nick Frost

The Story: The origin story of WWE superstar Paige.

The Review:
I have been a fan of WWE superstar Paige ever since the night she debuted on Monday Night Raw but to be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this movie. Fortunately, I was proven wrong and the film turned out to be a very entertaining and engaging story. The movie has a lot of humor, a lot of heart, and a classic underdog story that the film makers could easily take advantage of. Yes, this is a feel good movie and at times the feel goodness of it all is a bit forced but there is enough going on to make it worth the ride.

Florence Pugh is impressive as Paige and this movie could raise her up to superstar status just like the woman she was tasked to portray. I don't know how much of the stunt work or wrestling she did but her acting was top notch and she has more than enough personality to fill a main event match. Also impressive were Lena Heady and Nick Frost as Paige's parents who have basically lived on the UK indie wrestling circuit as a way to make a living. Vince Vaughn plays a fictional wrestling coach and is basically himself in the movie which is fine, I guess.

After reading a bit about the movie, I have learned that it is very accurate to Paige's real story although I will tell you that the recreation of her Raw debut is quite a bit different than how it really went down but the basic idea is there. Paige herself has said that the scene where The Rock yells at her and her brother as a coaching tool is fictional but he was the one who gave her the news of her promotion to the main roster which is one of the more emotional moments of the movie.

Fighting with My Family is a really fun movie that is worth checking out whether you are a fan of wrestling or not. If you're looking for one of those feel good, happy ending, inspirational type of movies, then this should definitely be one you want to check out.
