The Clovehitch Killer - 2018 Brooklyn Horror Film Festival Movie Review

The Movie: The Clovehitch Killer

The Director: Duncan Skiles

The Cast: Charlie Plummer, Dylan McDermott, Samantha Mathis, Madisen Beaty, Brenna Sherman, Lance Chantiles-Wertz, Kat PĂ©rez

The Story: A picture-perfect family is shattered when the work of a serial killer hits too close to home. Dylan McDermott stars in this chilling portrait of all-American evil.

The Review:
Just when you thought it was safe to have a family again, here comes the Clovehitch Killer to blow up traditional middle American values. Christopher Ford, who has a screenplay credit for Spider-Man: Homecoming, takes a huge left turn away from the world of super heroes to take us on a much scarier journey through the minds of people living seemingly ordinary lives. The story isn't dreadful or scary in the classic horror movie sense, the creepiness comes from how normal everything is on the surface and how messed up everyone is underneath.

This might be one of Dylan McDermott's best performances of his career as he plays a father who wholeheartedly believes he is doing right by his family while hiding a secret life he is constantly trying to protect and overcompensate for. His son in the movie is played by Charlie Plummer who recently had the role of John Paul Getty III in Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World and the two play off each other perfectly with McDermott trying to maintain order and control while Plummer begins to see the cracks in his father's overly structured parenting.

The Clovehitch Killer is one of those movies you can't take your eyes off of. It makes you think and it makes you question where we are as a culture, as a society, and as a people. Every person in this movie has flaws that are born out of projecting and protecting the image of who they are supposed to be while suppressing the true nature of who they are for better or worse. The movie won't have you screaming or jumping out of your seat, it is more the type of horror movie that leaves you unsettled and uncomfortable about what you just saw because it could be happening for real just down the street.

The Clovehitch Killer is an official selection of the 2018 Brooklyn Horror Film Festival.
