Searching - Movie Review

The Movie: Searching

The Director: Aneesh Chaganty

The Cast: John Cho, Debra Messing, Sara Sohn, Michelle La, Joseph Lee

The Story: After his 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a desperate father breaks into her laptop to look for clues to find her.

The Review:
The computer screen perspective movie is becoming more and more of a thing with the Unfriended series gaining traction in the horror genre and Timur Bekmambetov's Profile having recent success on the film festival circuit. Searching hopes to take the genre another step further with a full international release and casting the ever popular John Cho in the lead role. After directing several short films under his belt, I feel like this was a very unique type of movie for Aneesh Chaganty to sue as his debut feature. I really liked how he used a lot of different creative ways to keep the story on the computer screen without it feeling gimmicky or cheesy.

Even with all the creative film making techniques and perfect casting, the movie would be nothing without a good story and Searching is definitely a good story. There are several twists and turns that keep you guessing and the ending is about as satisfying as it could be even if it was a bit predictable. John Cho absolutely nails the performance and this movie should elevate him from supporting actor to leading actor status, I mean if casting directors are actually good at their jobs. Debra Messing, who pretty much everyone knows from her years on the Will & Grace TV show, really takes a left turn here and ]shows a side that is a lot more gritty than you might expect.

The Verdict:
Searching is a very well executed crime thriller that succeeds in providing a unique movie going experience. Definitely worth checking out, especially to see John Cho take center stage in a feature film.
