The Commuter - Movie Review

The Movie: The Commuter

The Director: Jaume Collet-Serra

The Cast: Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson

The Story: A businessman is caught up in a criminal conspiracy during his daily commute home.

The Review:
So, Jaume Collet-Serra and Liam Neeson have worked together on a few different movie projects and someone really needs to put a stop to this madness. Neeson himself recently said he is now done making action movies and I feel like this movie could be the reason why. The story is decent enough although painfully predictable, but the main issue I have with the movie is how awful the action scenes are. I get they have to find ways around Neeson's physical deficiencies at this point but it all looks so fake and the bigger moments of action look like a deranged version of the already deranged looking CGI from The Polar Express.

Another major issue I have is with the casting. How are you going to put Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in the movie and collectively give them about 10 minutes of screen time. Seriously! Sure, this is a Liam Neeson movie, but both of those actors are so good on screen yet are reduced to bit parts in this movie which is a real shame. If all three had somehow been featured prominently from start to finish, this might have been a halfway decent movie.

The Review:
The Commuter is filled with faults and flaws yet is surprisingly entertaining and I feel weird admitting that I enjoyed watching it. If you choose to see the movie, and I'm not telling you not to, stay away from the premium format theaters as they will make the movie worse. Better to see a matinee at a small theater where no one will see you, but yeah, give it a shot.
