Blue (HIFF 2017) - Documentary Review

The Documentary: Blue

The Director: Karina Holden

The Story: Blue is a provocative journey into the ocean realm, witnessing this critical moment in time when the marine world is on a precipice.

The Review:

"Up to a third of the fish we eat every day that is sold in our supermarkets has been caught illegally."

"In two decades, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish."

"Less than 5% of the ocean is currently protected."

For decades, the human race has been highly effective at destroying the planet we live on. Carbon gases, deforestation, and other forms of environmental abuse have been highly documented and some efforts have been made to correct them. One area that really hasn't seen as much attention is how we have been treating the oceans and this documentary turns on a huge spotlight in that very direction.

Director Karina Holden deftly uses her camera to show the beauty of the oceans as well as the ugly side of how industrialism has had a horrible and growing impact. She takes us on a tour around the world where she finds people making efforts to help care for our oceans from clearing beaches of discarded fishing nets to putting a halt to illegal fishing operations.

Humanity of course is the primary villain in this story and our creation of plastic has had a profoundly negative impact across the board which sucks because there's no way to get rid of it. It just degrades to microscopic levels and continues to affect the ecosystem in various ways. That being said, there are things we can do and Holden makes sure to show us what is possible although the urgency is definitely there.

The Verdict:
Blue is an eye opening and extremely important look at how we have impacted our oceans and what we can do to make a difference. At just over an hour, this beautifully filmed documentary wastes no time at getting its message across. Check out the film's website for more info.
