Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - Movie Review

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a film by Tim Burton and is based off of a young adult fantasy novel written by Ransom Riggs. The film features acting performances from Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Samuel L. Jackson, Judi Dench, Rupert Everett, Allison Janney, Chris O'Dowd, Terence Stamp, and Ella Purnell.

The Review:
Oh, how the might have fallen. I see why Tim Burton was chosen to direct this film, the material suits him quite nicely. The issue is that he doesn't do a very good job with the material and I'm not sure if anyone would have been able to do much with it as the story just isn't very good. The movie feels very rushed as it races through exposition and exploration in an attempt to keep the already bloated run time of over two hours from getting completely out of hand. As a matter of fact, they seem to cram another movie's worth of story into about two minutes at the end in an attempt to reach a conclusion that really makes no sense at all.

In the theater there was a group of teenage girls sitting behind me who, having clearly read the books, were whispering to each other throughout the film. For the most part, it seemed that they wee enjoying themselves although a little confused by the adaptation. What was most interesting was this particular quote said by one of them as the credits began to roll: "Wait, what just happened? That was hecka weird! I have no idea what they just did."

The Verdict:
Sadly, this film will end up on the ever growing scrap heap of failed attempts at creating cinematic franchises out of popular young adult novels. Kids and teens might enjoy this movie although, based on the audience I was with, most will walk out confused about why they changed the story so much and laughing about how silly the rest of it is.
