Jack Reacher: Never Go Back - Movie Review

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, produced by and starring Tom Cruise, sees the return of the titular hero made famous by the series of novels written by Lee Child. The movie was directed by Edward Zwick (Glory, Legends of the Fall, Blood Diamond) and features supporting performances from Cobie Smulders (Avengers), Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton), Danika Yarosh, and Patrick Heusinger (Black Swan).

The Review:
Edward Zwick has been behind the lens for some really good movies including the examples mentioned above as well as The Last Samurai which also saw him collaborate with Tom Cruise. While this film won't be considered one of his finest efforts, it is reasonably entertaining as a basic and familiar action thriller. I was honestly expecting more from the story considering how much people love the books and how passionate Cruise is about this character.

Cruise himself turns in another solid performance although some will continue to point out that he doesn't really match the character who is supposed to be a much more physically imposing figure. That being said, he has proven over the years to be a viable action star and this film does nothing to change that. The other two primary characters in the movie are played by Cobie Smulders as Major Turner, the current CO of Reacher's old command who is framed for espionage, and Danika Yarosh as a teenager who ends up under the protection of both Reacher and Turner. There really isn't much to say about the quality of acting since the focus is on the action and Reacher beating the crap out of thugs and mercenaries.

The Verdict:
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is a solid action film featuring a pretty much non stop barrage of Tom Cruise kicking ass and shooting everything in sight. The story doesn't break any new ground although I get the impression it isn't really trying to. If you like Cruise and are a fan of action movies, you will most likely enjoy this film, just don't get your hopes up too high.
