Escape Room (SIFF 2017) - Movie Review

The Movie: Escape Room

The Director: Will Wernick

The Cast: Evan Williams, Annabelle Stephenson, Elisabeth Hower, Dan J. Johnson, John Ierardi, Kelly Delson, Billy Flynn

The Story: Six friends test their intelligence in a game that takes a dark turn.

The Review:
Although lacking in originality, it's basically a twist on the Saw movies, the idea for this film still has a lot of potential and could easily be turned into a franchise of is own if executed properly. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot to like about the finished product as the story is just a mess of inconsistencies, incoherent dialog, and inexplicable decision making. The cast, while extremely glossy and highly attractive, suffers from a serious case of over acting in just bout every situation.

I'll give points for effort as it seems everyone involved was very enthusiastic about making this movie, it just didn't work out as intended. The scares are minimal, the gore is really tame, and there is no sense of urgency, tension, or danger, mainly because it so hard to like any of the overly entitled victims. I feel like the story would have gone over way better if you cared about who was going through the ordeal instead of the way it punishes people just for being rich ass holes. Movies like Seven, Saw, and dozens of others have done a way better job of covering that same territory.

Escape Room is an official selection of the 2017 Seattle International Film Festival.
