The Wall (2017) - Movie Review

The Movie: The Wall

The Director: Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow)

The Cast: Aaron Taylor Johnson, John Cena, Laith Nakli

The Story: Two American Soldiers are trapped by a lethal sniper, with only an unsteady wall between them.

The Review:
The first thing you may be thinking about this film is whether or not you would ever want to watch John Cena, the guy from WWE, in an Iraq war thriller, or any other type of movie for that matter. Well, get those thoughts out of your head because he dies just fine and the movie is actually pretty fantastic. If this makes you feel any better, the director is Doug Liman, who is responsible for most of the Bourne movies as well as Edge of Tomorrow so that gives this project very real and instant credibility. While this is a much smaller film in scale, the action and intensity you might expect are definitely there and Liman keeps the pace moving along even when not a whole lot is happening.

Getting back to Cena, his role is relatively minor compared to Aaron Taylor-Johnson although no less important and he puts everything into coming up with a surprisingly credible and impactful performance, all things considered. Yes, I was surprised that the "U Can't See Me" guy actually has some legitimate skills in front of the camera outside of dropping elbows and throwing guys across the ring. That being said, the story absolutely highlights and focuses on Taylor-Johnson's character and how he is forced to play mind games with a hidden sniper while trying to survive a bullet wound to his leg and the unrelenting desert surrounding him. Taylor-Johnson has definitely come a long way since his days playing Kick-Ass and what he does with this role could go a long way to solidifying his standing among Hollywood's current crop of leading actors.

The Verdict:
The Wall is an intense, suspenseful, and surprisingly effective small scale thriller that will keep you on the edge of you seat from start to finish. There are plenty of twists and turns although it's the ending that may shock you and leave you saying, wow, did that just happen?! Give this movie a chance, you will not be disappointed.
